Road Course Racing

‍Non-Traditional Class Collections

We’re doing something a little different. Instead of housing, operating, and policing seven rule sets (including drift), each with its own culture and quirks, we figured it’s a better experience for everyone if we just go straight to the experts. We’ve partnered with race groups directly — but separately — so these group leads will be in charge of rulesets, tech, and pre-event questions specific to their class.

Example: What tire are we on for Spec Miata? Ask your group lead.

Thunderhill Open Driver Resources

Hey everyone - Matt with Thunderhill here,

As we approach 2 weeks until the event, I wanted to reach out to everyone with some details. First and foremost, we wanted to share with you the drive that will house all the driver resource documents, such as the Tech form (more on that later), the paddock map (more on that later), and on-track schedules for the road racing program.

CLICK ME FOR RACER DOCUMENTS

Drifters, a separate email from the Super D team will arrive shortly with your schedule and paddock maps.

Load-In/Gate Credentials

Load-in will begin on Thursday, May 14th, at 1 PM. Paddock Camping is allowed starting Thursday night, with gate hours of 6 a.m.-12am Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. 6 am - 7 pm on Sunday. Spectator gate controls start at 6 am on Friday, with 2 lanes.

Participants or Spectators: follow the Participant lane to the guard shack to sign the waiver, as usual. We will have your wristband for gate entry at Registration, along with an extra wristband.

So, to be clear your entry comes with facility access for you and one friend, if you have multiple people coming, extra crew, etc. we need those folks to Purchase a General Admission ticket here. - GA check-in will be at the box office, right next to the guard shack.

We've got an exciting vendor and activity midway on the small pad, including a gaming truck, putt-putt golf, a golf-sim chipping competition, food trucks, music, and much more. The GA ticket price is $20 for all 3 days, and helps us cover the costs of the activity. The GA price goes up to $30 starting Friday morning. With the GA gate being what it is, we are asking folks to get here as early as they can.

Once you open the participant folder, you will find a paddock map - we are highly encouraging groups to paddock together. This is not a "rule," just a suggestion, but we will have spectators on site all weekend, with their GA tickets being a pit pass - it adds to the event for all parties if we can get the groups close together.

Tech

In the racer documents, you will find a 3-page tech form that includes a self-tech check-off sheet, a helmet/harness sign-off, and a medical form. We need you to complete your vehicle checks and bring the completed forms to your Group lead after you get loaded in and settled.

From there, your group lead will inital/sign-off on your tech form, if you already have a logbook/annual this will be extremely quick.

After getting through tech, you are ready to head to Registration. We need you to do your tech thing before going to registration, if you do not have your completed and initialled tech forms at Reg, we are gonna have to send you back your group lead and we want to avoid that annoyance.

We also ask that everyone take a picture of their transponder number to bring to Registration. This allows us to verify that what is on the car matches what is in MotorsportReg and enables Timing to build all sessions accurately.

Registration

As mentioned, please bring the Tech forms and a pic of the transponder number to Tech to check in. At check-in, you will receive a commemorative cup, driving suit patch, and your +1 wristband. We will have printed schedules.

Dyno

MCE will be on site all weekend, starting Thursday afternoon. MCE will prioritize WTCC for compliance checks on Friday and after sessions on Saturday and Sunday, but they will be available for anyone to do 3 pulls for $85. $85 does include compliance pulls; please coordinate with the WTCC group lead for more details.

The SpeedSF Homologation Special

We have partnered with SpeedSF to put on the Homologation Special, a special, solo-only HPDE group to partake in the fun!

If you have friends who were bummed their class or discipline wasn't included, this is their chance to participate!

You can find all the information and Registration here!

Live Stream

We have a live stream for the Road Racing portion of the event! We are super excited to have a live stream for all on-track sessions throughout the weekend, starting Saturday, with the one and only Tom O'Gorman as our primary announcer.

We wanna load these guys up with as much information about YOU as we can get, so please Go Fill Out This Form, which gives TomO some more detail about you, your car, and your racing history that he can use on stream.

Logitech G and Toyo Tires

We are very thankful and excited to have Logitech G and Toyo Tires as partners for the first Thunderhill Open - They believed in the vision, and have chipped in to support YOU!

Logitech G has supplied us with an RS50 Driving Simulator setup for all class winners, and one to raffle off to our Homologation Special friends.

Toyo has committed to running the 205/50/15 RR for the year and has made sure the strong SMT class here in Norcal can keep doing its thing.

Tell everyone we can about how much we appreciate their support!

Please, tag @Logitechg and @ToyoTires. The more love we show them, the easier it is to get more support for grassroots racing in the future. So please, make sure we match their commitment. Thank you!

Thank you!

Thank you for taking a chance on a new event. Thank you for showing us support. And (pre-emptive) Thank You for a little grace as we figure this whole thing out -

The Thunderhill Open represents a big step for Thunderhill and racing in Northern California, we decided we needed to do this event not just as something to do - but as an R&D event for what is possibe in the future, learning things that we can share with all of our beloved customers who rent or participate in events at Thunderhill, and putting our money where our mouth is when it comes to providing better experiences for club racing. All that being said, we are already learning a ton and will learn even more before this is all done.

Road Racing Format

Given that most of what we’re doing is pretty non-traditional, we figured—why not do the same with the format?

We’ve always loved the heat-based structures popular in karting and dirt series across the country.

Here's What To Expect

  • A single practice session on Saturday morning
  • 4 heat races
  • Heat 1 starts with a random grid
  • Finishing position from each heat sets your grid for the next heat
  • Heat 3 finish sets your starting position for the Main
  • Main: The weekend podium is based on the finishing position in the Main

Event Requirements

Event Requirements‍: For road racing classes, a valid competition license is required.

Questions? Email matt@thunderhill.com Tech, logbook, and other requirements specific to your class should be directed to your Group Lead.

Races

‍Heat races will be 8 laps (not time-based),

And the Main is scheduled for 12 laps.
